One of the most famous and popular coloured gemstones, ruby is characterised by its durability and striking red tones, which can vary from pink-red to purple-red.

Ruby is in the same family of gemstones as sapphire: corundum. Unlike sapphire, however, rubies are always red, whereas sapphires can be found in several different colours. This family of gemstones is second only to diamonds in terms of hardness, making it ideal for all kinds of jewellery.

As with many of our other gemstones, we recommend cleaning your rubies with a mild soapy solution and a soft brush or toothbrush, and drying with a soft cloth. We always recommend carefully storing your jewellery to avoid knocks and abrasion.

Ruby is the birthstone for July, and the traditional gift for a 40th wedding anniversary.
