Pearls are one of the most prized gemstones, and have been for centuries. They're found in molluscs and consist of layers of nacre, which provides both the structure of the pearl and the lustre.
Pearls can be either freshwater or saltwater; freshwater pearls tend to be button or potato shaped, while saltwater pearls are more spherical.
Tahitian pearls are the only pearls on the market that are naturally black in colour (but the lustre can show green, blue, grey and bronze tones); all other dark pearls are dyed or stained.
Pearls do require some extra care when wearing or storing to prevent damage. Never spray perfume or hairspray on pearls as the alcohol can damage them. If you do want to wear perfume or cosmetics with your pearls, we recommend applying them first and leaving them to dry for 10-15 minutes before putting on your pearl jewellery. As pearls are easily scratched, we recommend storing them carefully, away from other jewellery. With regards to cleaning, avoid detergents and soaps as these can damage your pearls.
